Pitches

Pitch

In music, pitch is the method for describing the frequency of a sound wave. If a sound wave has a high frequency of vibration it is considered a high sound and low frequency is considered a low sound.  In other words pitch describes how high or low a note is.

Treble Clef Pitches

The treble clef pitches are the higher notes in music.  They are written on lines and spaces and are labled below.

Bass Clef

The bass clef pitches are the lower notes in music.  They are also written on lines and spaces and are labeled below.

Sharps

Notes that have a sharp symbol sound a semitone higher than the note that appears on the musical staff. In the image below, the first note is a G while the second note is a G sharp.

Flats

Notes that have a flat symbol sound a semitone lower than the note that appears on the musical staff.  In the image below, the first note is a B while the second note is a B flat.

Natural

A natural cancels a previous flat or sharp in the music returning the pitch to its unaltered form.

In this image the E flat in the key signature is canceled out and the pitch becomes an E.
