Aug 4th/Dim 5th Ascending Practice Strategies

Augmented 4th/ Diminished 5th Ascending

The augmented 4th is an interval that spans four notes on the musical staff.  The diminished 5th spans five notes on the musical staff.  While they have different names these two intervals are the same size. They are both made up of 6 semitones or 3 whole tones, which is why they can be called a Tritone. It can be practiced the following ways.

Moveable Do:

Fa-Ti or Ti-Fa

Song References:

Scale Degree Numbers:

4-7 or 7-4

Sing the tritone interval using the strategy of your choice.  Try using a different strategy the second time for greater understanding.  The interval will be played twice.

*Fun Fact - the tritone was historically considered the Diabolus in musica (devil in music) because it was considered a dissonant or unharmonious sound
